Brother Down

It's rare to resuscitate someone who you have been talking to just moments before. It happens but as Paramedics we usually arrive on scene and our patient is already unconscious. It's much more difficult to have someone who goes from conscious and talking to dead right in front of you.

Now image it's your Brother or Sister you were just talking with or working with who dies in front of you. Image the stress, horror and disbelief of that situation. Now on top of that, as a medically trained person, you must overcome those piercing emotions and attempt resuscitation on your Brother or Sister. It's every Firefighter's worse nightmare and reality for many of us. It's the living that suffer the death of a loved one, their pain is over but ours is just beginning.

This piece is dedicated to all my Brothers and Sisters who have had to live this nightmare. I hope it gives you comfort.
