Sick kids are a tough one for me. One of the saddest calls I’ve done was for a boy who was having a really bad asthma attack, his father called 911 and when we arrived we saw the two of them sitting in the living room waiting for us to arrive. The boy already had a NEB on but still looked pretty bad. They had a lot of family pictures around with the two of them and what I assumed was their Mother/Wife. I overheard the father telling his son that his mother was here and watching over him.
While getting a history from the father he informed me that his wife, the boy’s mother, had died the previous week after a long battle with cancer. I could tell the boy was comforted with the thought of his mother being there. The empathy I felt for both of them on this call really hit me hard. The thought of the boy’s mother being there, watching over him, made all of us feel a bit better. Look closely at this piece and see if you can spot her. The boy recovered from his asthma attack and I like to think his mother is still watching over him and his father.
Have a safe and healthy week everyone.
