Not all is Doom and Gloom
Probably the biggest reason I wanted to become a Paramedic was that I didn't want to work in an office. I wanted to do something different every day or at least have the potential to be surprised at work every day. I'm still surprised at some of the calls I get, I couldn't dream up of some of the situations I've been in.
In an effort to raise PTSD awareness for first responders my posts are sometimes pretty dark. I want to thank all of you who sent me emails after my last post wondering if I was feeling okay. It's wonderful to be part of such a supportive network.
Everything isn't doom and gloom in the world of first responders. The increase in mental health awareness for us is fantastic and although there's still a long way to go things are getting better. Never knowing what our next call will be or when it will happen is exciting and being in a position to really help people is an amazing honour. Sometimes when I'm on my way home from work and reflecting on the calls I've done I can't believe the situations I've been in, most of them being positive and incredibly rewarding.
15 years later this job still surprises me...and that's wonderful.
Stay safe everyone.
